I am relocating to Arizona in the near future. How is the Arizona Chapter set up?

The AZ Chapter is governed by a 19-member Board of Directors. The office is staffed by two employees: Carol Stambaugh, Executive Director, and RoAnne Edick, Administrative Assistant. Chapter services include a biennial state conference, educational workshops, a bi-monthly newsletter, and general resource assistance.

We have approximately 2000 members in Arizona and the Chapter is divided into four geographical branches, each with local leadership that develops and implements programs to further professional goals. The AZ Chapter of NASW is divided into 4 major branches. Branch 1 contains the metro Phoenix area and extends west to Yuma. Branch 2 includes Tucson and the southern part of the state. Branch 3 is the northern area including Flagstaff and Branch 4 is a small branch that contains the area of Prescott and Prescott Valley.

How do I get acquainted with social workers in my area?

Getting involved at the local level is a great way to network and meet people and to keep abreast of what’s happening at the local, state, and national levels. A list of the contacts in the various branches can be found bi-monthly in our chapter newsletter. We encourage you to call your contact person to learn of activities planned for your area.

Can you tell me what the job market is like?

Salary statistics are very difficult to acquire. According to the Economic Research Institutes website, Social Workers' average salary in Arizona is $34,049, in Phoenix $33,474, in Tucson $36,082, and in Flagstaff $30,903. These figures do not take into account the degree (BSW vs. MSW), the number of years of experience, or the field of practice of social workers.

What do I need to do to get a license in AZ?

In April 2003, our governor signed into law a multi-level licensure bill to license social workers. The licensure bill went into effect as of July 1, 2004.  Arizona does not have a simple reciprocity status with other states; however, it may not be that difficult for you to transfer an already existing license by going through the application process and having your test courses mailed to AZ BBHE. The AZ licensing exam for social workers is the test written by ASWB. This is the same instrument many states use. For an application/further information, contact: AZ Board of Behavioral Health Examiners, 1400 W. Washington, Ste. 350, Phoenix, AZ 85007, Off: 602/542-1882, Fax: 602/542-1830, Email:  information@azbbhe.us     Application materials can be downloaded directly from their website at http://www.azbbhe.us

How can I advertise on the NASW-AZ website?

Employers advertise job ads free on the website. This gives employers incentive to post job openings with us, therefore giving our members more job ads to choose from. All job ads that are on the website will automatically appear in a list of job titles in the bimonthly newsletter as well.

Calendar listings under our Educational Events/Community Workshops menu are designed for Educational Providers to advertise their continuing education events. These website ads are very reasonable, at only $25 per ad, which gives organizations the freedom to advertise their workshops worry-free. All calendar ads that are on the website will automatically be placed into the bimonthly newsletter.
